A great baseball town

The glory days of Newark baseball were long before multi-million dollar contracts and chartered jets.
These were also the days before black players were allowed to play in the major leagues.
Many of the players on Newark two teams, the white Bears and the black Eagles, went on to Hall of Fame.

Some of the names are legendary: Yogi Berra, Larry Doby, Monte Irvin, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker.

Today Essex County recognized fourteen players on a Ring of Honor at Bears and Eagles Stadium.

Star-Ledger columnist Jerry Izenberg was also honored. Earlier this year we collaborated on a video highlighting Jerry's youth in baseball crazed Newark.
